Iowa Supreme Court Grants Dubuque Man New Trial

The Iowa Supreme Court yesterday upheld a lower court’s order, ruling that a Dubuque man convicted of killing his girlfriend in 2017 will get a new trial.

The court ruled now-28-year old Fontae Buelow was not given a fair trial. At trial, the justices said his trial judge limited his ability to present evidence that 21-year old Samantha Link had a history of mental illness and suicide attempts prior to her death.

Buelow’s conviction and 50-year prison sentence were overturned on appeal in December 2019, and prosecutors asked the Supreme Court to review the decision.
